Red Cross launches urgent Caribbean hurricane appeal
10 September 2008
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an appeal for 1.8 million Swiss francs (1.6 million US dollars or 1.1 million euro) to support the disaster response efforts of Red Cross societies in Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Cayman Islands.
The societies are responding to a humanitarian emergency caused by a devastating series of storms including hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike.
The funds raised will be used to meet the urgent needs of 5,000 families over the next six months. According to IFRC specialists on the ground, the most immediate needs include food as well as basic relief items such as family kits, jerry cans, mosquito nets, water purification tablets, hygiene parcels, tarpaulins, buckets, blankets, mattresses and sheet sets.
Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike have caused serious damage to homes and infrastructure as well as agricultural crops and community livelihoods.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has been coordinating efforts both inside and outside the region since the onset of the emergency. Personnel have been deployed from a number of Red Cross Red Crescent societies worldwide, and the IFRC is in close contact with the Caribbean Red Cross societies via high frequency radio, which is being used to monitor the emergency on the affected islands.
The Red Cross Red Crescent has extensive disaster response experience from past hurricane emergencies and, through their network of dedicated volunteers, is making a significant contribution to the humanitarian response efforts and towards reducing the impact of the disaster on vulnerable communities.
