Zimbabwe cholera: IFRC launches ten-million-Swiss franc appeal

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today (23 December) launched an appeal for 10.2 million Swiss franc (9.2 million US dollars, 6.6 million euro) to fund a massive response to the ongoing cholera crisis in Zimbabwe.

Bam earthquake: five years later

The psychological scars still linger from the devastating earthquake that destroyed almost the entire city of Bam in December 2003. The massive quake killed some 26,000 people and left 30,000 with life long injuries. Five years on people still struggle to cope while around them reconstruction continues. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has played a vital role in the healing process and, perhaps just as importantly, in preparing the people of Bam to minimize loss of life and property should a sudden disaster strike in the future.

Zimbabwe: IFRC ramps up assistance in response to escalating cholera crisis in the Southern African region

As the humanitarian situation worsens in Zimbabwe, the IFRC is increasing its support of cholera prevention activities throughout the country. Latest estimates put the total of reported cholera cases at over 12,500 and at least 500 deaths. The situation is expected to worsen as rainfall increases, and the flood season begins.

Panama and Costa Rica: Heavy floods prompt IFRC emergency appeal

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched a preliminary emergency preliminary appeal for 700,000 Swiss francs (572,000 US dollars, 450,000 euro) to support the Costa Rica and Panamá Red Cross societies in their response to major flooding affecting several parts of the countries. A total of 15,000 people will be supported over the next nine months.

Kenya: Cholera risks, floods and ethnic violence prompt major IFRC appeal

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is launching an emergency preliminary appeal for 6.1 million Swiss francs (5.1 million US dollars, 3.9 million euro) to support the Kenya Red Cross Society in its response to major flooding affecting several parts of the countries since last month. A total of 300,000 people will be supported over the next six months.

IFRC launches new procurement services portal

The development of this portal was made possible thanks to funding from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO). Sichuan Earthquake: Following significant relief efforts, massive recovery programme taking shape in China

Six months ago on 12 May 2008, a massive earthquake devastated south-western China, killing more than 80,000 people and displacing nearly 15 million people in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as well as the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies around the world have since implemented an enormous humanitarian relief effort.

Morocco floods: Red Crescent teams pursue emergency assistance as rains continue

More than 200 Moroccan Red Crescent volunteers and staff continue to assist more than 6,000 people left homeless by torrential rains that have devastated 16 regions in the country since early October. The subsequent flooding has left at least 30 people dead, affected some 20,000, and destroyed homes, roads, water and sanitation systems, crops and livestock.

International Day for Disaster Reduction: In Central Asia, early action saves lives

When trained disaster response teams of Tajikistan Red Crescent volunteers and staff arrived on the site of an earthquake that measured 5.5 on the Richter scale in Rasht, eastern Tajikistan, only six hours after the disaster struck on 22 July last year, it was proof if needed that good, community-based disaster preparedness training helps save lives, reduce risk and promptly deliver vital assistance to survivors. The Red Crescent team was the first on the scene to provide first aid, assess needs and bring emergency relief to 720 of the most affected people.
