2005, the hurricane season for the Caribbean lasts from June
through November.
This year, a disaster preparedness strategy was followed
and all the National Societies of the region, with the support
of the International Federation, responded to the hazards of this hurricane season, as they did
in 2004. |

Season 2005: ‘Annus horribilis’
With 26 tropical storms and 14 hurricanes,
the 2005 hurricane season has been rated one of the most active
and destructive in history. The day before the hurricane season’s
official end on 30 November saw the formation of the last
named tropical storm of the year, the record-breaking Epsilon.

The International Federation of Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies is concerned about the slow response
to the appeal it launched to support the ongoing relief operation
for victims of the strong earthquake which ravaged northern
parts of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan on 8 October. The
73-million-Swiss franc (€ 47 million/US$ 56.5 million)
preliminary appeal is less than 25 % covered, while the emerging
picture of needs on the ground, as assessment results arrive
from remote communities, worsens by the day.

in US history. More than 63,000 Red Cross volunteers and staff
have been mobilized to respond to this disaster. Around 700
Red Cross shelters were established and are housing thousands
of residents who fled Katrina’s wrath.

As Hurricane Emily swept over the Windward Islands, it
left a trail of destruction in Grenada and Tobago, two of the
islands still recovering from last year’s damage caused
by Hurricane Ivan. Coming less than a week after Hurricane Dennis
devastated the Caribbean, causing death and destruction in Cuba,
Jamaica and Haiti, Emily remains a threat.
