Tragedy in the United States
A message from the Standing Commission
of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to all National
Societies
12 September 2001
While in session yesterday, the Standing
Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was shocked
to learn of the devastating attacks in the United States of America,
deeply wounding the American people. Immediately, the Standing Commission
expressed its deep concern and compassion in writing to the American
Red Cross and to the United States Department of State.
In responses to the tragic events, the American Red Cross immediately
provided life saving assistance to the victims throughout the United
States. The American Red Cross has received messages of sympathy
and offers for assistance from National Societies all around the
world. They will advise if there are specific needs to be met by
international assistance. Details of how individuals can contribute
to the victims of these and other disasters are posted on the American
Red Cross and International Federation websites.
The Standing Commission calls on all components of the Movement
to redouble their efforts to promote the Principles of the Movement
and to strengthen their action to respond to the needs of victims
of conflict and disaster and of people in vulnerable situations
everywhere.
