Young faces made a welcome appearance on the platform of the 16th General Assembly, as five National Societies received the Federation’s Youth Award.

The award went to the Costa Rican Red Cross, for its psychosocial support programme; the Uganda Red Cross, for its innovative HIV work; the Norwegian Red Cross for developing a role play to sensitize audiences on the situation of refugees in the country; and a joint award for the American Red Cross and the Italian Red Cross, for their strong programmes in promoting youth leadership and involvement in National Society structure and local services. Roy-Andre Sorheim, from the Norwegian Red Cross, was nominated to speak on behalf of the winning National Societies:

“In Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world, youth are managing to make a difference. We are carrying out and developing programmes for and by youth.” After the ceremony, Marilena Musmeci, from the Italian Red Cross, said it was “a great honour” to be awarded.

“Young people in Italy are very involved in main areas of the Red Cross. We do disaster preparedness, health and care and also international activities. We currently have a big campaign for HIV prevention. Our volunteers are very professional in the way they work and we undergo many training courses with them.”

The Bulgarian Red Cross also won the Volunteering Award, designed to recognize National Societies which have developed their volunteer management programmes, and received 8,000 Swiss francs.

Accepting the award was the Society’s Director General, Dr Sofia Stoimenova: “I’m deeply moved and honoured to receive the award on behalf of the thousands of committed Bulgarian volunteers who carry out a variety of activities.

“We are happy to be part of the global Red Cross family of millions of volunteers who play a key role in our Movement.” The ceremony also included the presentation of the Henry Davison Award, named after the Federation’s founder, which recognizes outstanding service in improving the lives of vulnerable people.

The winners were Dr. Young-Hoon Suh, former president of the Republic of Korea National Red Cross; Professor and Doctor My Samedy, former secretary general of the Cambodian Red Cross; the Honduras Red Cross Society; and Ms Casilda de Silva Y Fernandez de Henestrosa, former president of the Spanish Red Cross.
