China: Red Cross providing much needed shelter to earthquake survivors
20 June 2008
“We were living 80 kilometers away from here before the earthquake” says Mrs.Yan Wen, who is currently living in a tent, provided by the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS), along with ten people including her young daughter. “Our house was damaged and the houses around us were collapsing, so it was too dangerous to stay.”

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are working with National Societies from at least ten countries to provide 100,000 tents throughout earthquake affected provinces—including 9,420 tents from the JRCS—by the end of June.

In Qingchuan County, in the north eastern part of Sichuan Province, a 350 kilometer journey from Chengdu, there are approximately 1,500 people taking shelter in a 100 Light Weight Tents (LWTs) provided by the JRCS. The survivors who are staying in this area are working with volunteers to set-up additional tents, reducing the number of occupancy while improving the overall living conditions.

Although many people are anxious to move into semi-permanent houses once they are constructed, survivors continue to remain optimistic and grateful for the international assistance.

“I can’t be thankful enough to the people all over the world who are concerned about us,” says Mrs. Wen. “I think we are very lucky to be here, to have water, food and shelter, we are fortunate.”
