| Climate change, migration, recurrent diseases and violence on agenda of International Federation General Assembly 19 November 2007 Participants to the 17th session of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ General Assembly, which will be held in Geneva from 20 to 22 November, under the theme “Together for Humanity”, are facing a full agenda. Climate change and its humanitarian impact, recurrent diseases, urban violence and migration are among the subjects to be discussed by some 700 delegates, representing more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from around the world. The General Assembly is the Federation’s highest decision-making body. “We must take advantage of our global reach and the diversity of our millions of volunteers to fulfill our humanitarian mission ever more efficiently,” noted International Federation President Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro. “But we cannot do it alone. We are actively contributing to the achievement of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals and we are also entering into Global Alliances to fight the spread of HIV and to promote risk reduction, in order to mitigate the impact of disasters on vulnerable populations. Global challenges need global action.” Delegates at the General Assembly will look at how to consolidate the Federation’s strategy to address a number of topics, which include violence in urban settings, environmental degradation – including climate change, the situation of irregular migrants and victims of human trafficking, and emergent and recurrent diseases, such as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, measles and avian flu. “We are particularly concerned about the plight of international migrants not protected by existing legislation, and we must make sure they receive the help they need, whatever their legal status, and in particular, the victims of human trafficking” said Markku Niskala, secretary general of the International Federation. “We will also discuss the way forward for the implementation of our Global Agenda, in the field of disasters, health, community resilience and human dignity. We also want to make sure our Global Programme for Africa will improve the lives of millions of Africans caught up in inhuman situations of vulnerability.” On 23 and 24 November, the General Assembly will be followed by the Council of Delegates, which brings together representatives of Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, the International Federation Secretariat and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
