International Federation rewards its most deserving
21 November 2007
At a special ceremony held during the General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva today, several people and National Societies were honoured for their exceptional contribution to the organization’s humanitarian mission, as recipients of the Henry Davison Award, the Youth Award and the Volunteering Award.
The Henry Davison Award, named after the Federation’s founder, recognizing outstanding service in improving the lives of vulnerable people was given to four recipients:
D
r. Young-Hoon Suh, former president of the Republic of Korea National Red Cross, for his efforts in developing the National Society’s capacities in the fields of family reunion, youth and blood programmes. The award was accepted on his behalf by the current president of the Republic of Korea National Red Cross, Dr Wan-Sang Han.
Professor and Doctor My Samedy, former secretary general of the Cambodian Red Cross, for his role in the renewal of the National Society in May 1979 and the redefining of its governmental mandate to assist the most vulnerable.
The Honduras Red Cross Society, for their excellent results in the strengthening of the National Society’s blood, ambulance and refugee care programmes as well as its exemplary role in facilitating the large international humanitarian response following Hurricane Mitch, in 1998.
Ms Casilda de Silva y Fernández de Henestrosa, former president of the Spanish Red Cross, for her strong commitment to build up the capacity of the National Society in its domestic and international work. Her son accepted the award on her behalf.
There were also four recipients of the Federation’s Youth Award, which is meant to reward and profile the work of Red Cross and Red Crescent youth, in the framework of the Federation’s Global Agenda goals.
The recipients were:
The Costa Rican Red Cross, for its psychosocial support programme “Return to happiness”, developed jointly with UNICEF, designed to help children affected by natural disasters, and focusing on the participation of the community in mitigation and reconstruction activities.
The Uganda Red Cross, for its innovative approach in combining prevention, care, treatment and support, as well as anti-stigma and advocacy initiatives, in its programmes to help young people living with HIV.
A prize was awarded jointly to both the American Red Cross and the Italian Red Cross, for their strong programmes in promoting youth leadership and involvement in National Society structure and local services.
The fourth prize was awarded to the Norwegian Red Cross for developing a role play, facilitated by young volunteers, and designed to sensitize audiences on the situation of refugees in the country. It was developed in partnership with the Norwegian government and the Guides and Scouts Association.
The millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers worldwide who give their time, energy and enthusiasm to implement programmes for the most vulnerable populations around the world, play a vital role at the heart of their communities. But although their action is not motivated by desire for gain, volunteer management and development require resources.
The Volunteering Award is designed to recognize National Societies which have shown commitment and progress in the development of their volunteer management programmes. This year, the recipient is the Bulgarian Red Cross, which successfully established a volunteer management system to better support their volunteers, especially at the community level. The award carries a cash prize of 8,000 Swiss francs.
