Haiti: Red Cross Red Crescent launches urgent appeal
5 September 2008
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an appeal for 3.8 million Swiss francs (3.4 million US dollars or 2.3 million euro) to support the humanitarian operation of the Haitian Red Cross, which is dealing with the impact of Hurricanes Gustav and Hanna.
The funds are urgently needed to allow the Haitian Red Cross to help 10,000 families (or 50,000 people) over the next six months. Essential food items, first aid materials, vital medicines, clean drinking water and shelter are among the most urgent needs at this time, according to IFRC specialists on the ground.
Thousands of Red Cross volunteers are working round the clock to aid the mounting number of victims after strong winds and torrential rains swept the country, especially in Artibonite, where many inhabitants have been evacuated to temporary shelters.
Ongoing heavy rains block access to the affected areas making delivery of essential aid extremely hazardous and reducing the possibilities to conduct much-needed humanitarian assessments.
The IFRC’s Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) has dispatched a flight with emergency supplies for 1,000 families.
An IFRC team of disaster response specialists has now joined with Red Cross personnel on the spot in Haiti.
