2015 ECOSOC - Principles in Action: How do Neutrality and Independence contribute to humanitarian effectiveness?

17 June, 2015. Geneva, Switzerland.

On 17 June, 2015 from 17:15-18:30 the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will host a live-stream side event during the 2015 UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Humanitarian Affairs Segment on Principles in Action: How do Neutrality and Independence contribute to humanitarian effectiveness?’

The conference, which will feature a panel discussion followed by a debate and Q&A session, will discuss how the principles of Neutrality and Independence effectively contribute to humanitarian effectiveness, and indeed what is meant by the concept of humanitarian effectiveness.

For the Red Cross and Red Crescent the Fundamental Principles provide the ethical, operational and institutional framework guiding our Movement work at all times. Many other organizations have adopted principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence. Yet their interpretation and application is not always consistent for each organisation, nor perhaps in each context. The debate will examine the practical application of these principles and how this action can improve the circumstances of people affected by conflicts and disasters.

The 2015 UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment addresses the theme of 'The future of humanitarian affairs: towards greater inclusiveness, coordination, interoperability and effectiveness'. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Red Cross Red Crescent Fundamental Principles.

It is possible to attend the event by registering here. For accessing the live-stream of the event please visit this page.
