From October 19 until 22, Red Cross Red Crescent leaders from more than 50 African countries will gather in Addis Ababa for the 8th Pan African Conference (PAC). Held every four years, the predominant theme of PAC 2012 will be “Investing in Africa.
The Red Cross Red Crescent in Africa serves millions of vulnerable people and delivers long-term development programmes in partnership with local communities in 54 African countries. The Red Cross Red Crescent has deep, local roots with more than 1.4 million volunteers in Sub-Saharan Africa and thousands more across the continent. Together, these volunteers contribute more than 117 million US dollars worth of services across the continent.
Investing in Africa: Addis Ababa Plan of Action
We, the leaders of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of Africa, gathered in Addis Ababa for the 8th Pan African Conference,
Guided by our belief in Africa, its people and its future, and by the International Federation’s vision and values and Strategy 2020,
Recalling the Ouagadougou Declaration adopted at the 5th Pan-African Conference in 2000, the Algiers Plan of Action adopted at the 6th Pan-African Conference in 2004 and the Johannesburg Commitments adopted at the 7th Pan-African Conference in 2008.
Recognising that the growing economies in Africa provide new opportunities to raise new resources to support our humanitarian and development work
Determined therefore to grow and sustain Red Cross Red Crescent work and community action across Africa with a renewed emphasis on local, national and regional partnerships.
Advocating to Movement partners to continue to engage with African National Societies on achieving sustainable structures and services.
Acknowledging that it is the capacity and integrity of our leadership that will determine our ability to attract investment and that our reputations are mutually dependent.
We commit collectively and individually to Investing in Africa and to taking forward the Action Plan established at this 8 th Pan-African Conference.
