November 23rd November, Geneva - The Maldivian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) became the 187th member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies at the 18th Federation General Assembly in Geneva today.
Having fulfilled all the conditions necessary, MRC was welcomed to the Federation by President Tadateru Konoe and the attendees following this morning’s opening ceremony.
The process of forming the new National Society began in the wake of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which swept over the Maldives. These low-lying islands are among the most threatened territories in the world should sea levels rise significantly.
Speaking shortly after his society was formally recognised, Mr Ibrahim Shafeeg, President of the Maldives Red Crescent said “We feel great, like we finally made it. We will go forward faster, full of confidence. We are very proud to be a part of the family.”
