Rising to the challenge – the Red Cross Red Crescent approach to HIV

On World AIDS Day, 1 December 2006, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) launched our Global Alliance on HIV. This is our collective worldwide commitment “to do more and to do better” to reduce vulnerability to HIV and its impact.

National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies carry out this work, in support of their national HIV and AIDS programmes, and in cooperation with many partner organizations.

At the heart of our work, we:

  • take direct action at community and family level
  • advocate for the most stigmatized and marginalized members of the community
  • help people living with HIV to get care and support and to volunteer to support others
  • tackle gender inequality

What do we aim to achieve?

  • Prevent further HIV infection
  • Expand HIV care, treatment and support
  • Reduce HIV stigma and discrimination
  • Strengthen National Societies to deliver and sustain increased HIV programmes.
