“When
I arrived in Abbottabad there were only two to three tents on
the ground and another tent which served as the dispensary.
There wasn’t even clean water – even for operations,”
says Yasve Matsuzaki, one of the Japanese Red Cross nurses working
in the field hospital.
“I asked myself how I can work here?” Yasve, recalls,
continuing “then the Norwegian Red Cross staff arrived
with all the equipment needed on the ground including 12 purpose-made
hospital tents.”
“If the children are happy in this camp we owe this to
the Norwegian Red Cross, their technical staff have done a great
job.”
Ole Aaker, one of these Norwegian Red Cross technical staff,
echoes what Yasve says and adds: “as soon as we arrived,
we built up the tent hospital with 12 huge tents which now shelter
83 in-patients and dozens of outpatients. It has been a fantastic
experience, dealing with the Japanese nurses who have been working
tirelessly.
“Patients are happy with the services they receive from
these nurses. Finally, we see happy faces around and I feel
great especially seeing the big smiles on the children’s
faces,” he says.
Yasmeen, a Red Cross volunteer nurse at the field hospital agrees
with both and says: “working with colleagues from Red
Cross and Red Crescent societies is a life time experience for
me. I am learning a lot from them”.
Azmat Ulla, the Head of Delegation in Pakistan for the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says that
he believes the people of Pakistan are benefiting from the co-ordinated
approach of all the National Societies working with the International
Federation.
“We believe that aid is reaching more people, more quickly
and more effectively because of the very good cooperation between
the hosting authorities and the Red Cross Movement partners.
Generally, we have good coordination among the Red Cross and
Red Crescent Societies on the ground and the Japanese and Norwegian
Red Cross in the field hospital are a good example of what we
can achieve, working together as one combined team.”
