Red Crescent rescues 97-year-old woman from the ruins of Bam
3 January 2004

The Red Cross Red Crescent operation in Bam received a tremendous boost today when a 97-year-old woman was miraculously found alive in the rubble by an Iranian Red Crescent rescue team.

Shahrbanoo Mazandarani was discovered at 3:30 this afternoon local time in the ruins of her home in the Baghe Narang district of the city. Her home was completely destroyed but she was totally protected by a wooden beam under which she had fallen. An Iranian Red Crescent rescue team was called to the scene when her hand was seen barely protruding from the rubble.

The head of the Iranian Red Crescent International Department Mustafa Mohagegh described the scene, “At first they thought that it was a dead body but then saw some movement of the hand and realized she was still alive. They carefully removed her from the debris of the house and brought her to the Red Crescent headquarters in Bam.”

The first person to speak to her when she arrived at the makeshift clinic in the Red Crescent headquarters was Red Crescent volunteer Zohreh Shahyar (34 years old). “The first thing she said to me was ‘I felt very cold’, she asked me to put my hand behind her head, then she asked for tea and said the tea was too hot and she explained that she wanted the tea to be given to her by teaspoon. She also recited some Persian poetry.”

Dr. Habib Moghadam, the Red Crescent doctor treating her said, “She has no broken limbs and looks very well generally. She has a very good memory and is responding well to questions. It’s like a miracle of God that someone of this age and in this situation has survived so long.”

Mrs Mazandarani was being transferred tonight to the International Federation hospital run by medical staff from the Norwegian and Finnish Red Cross societies. Efforts were also underway to see if her children Ali and Shahbah Avaz have survived the earthquake. She also says that she has two grandchildren.
