97-year-old woman tells doctors how she survived Bam earthquake
4 January 2004

A medical team from the International Federation today interviewed the 97-year-old woman rescued from the ruins of her home in Bam yesterday afternoon by an Iranian Red Crescent team almost nine days after the earthquake which claimed some 30,000 lives.

Shahrbanoo Mazandarani was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Federation referral hospital which began to receive patients yesterday. After a good night’s rest and a light breakfast, she told doctors that she had been trapped in her bed but had access to some food and drink which had been served to her by her family in the early morning prior to the earthquake on December 26.

International Federation medical co-ordinator, Dr. Paul Odberg, said: “Her condition is consistent with someone who has been unable to move for several days. She is suffering from contractions of the limbs which means that she cannot walk and her limbs are almost ‘frozen’.” He added that she would remain under observation and treatment for some time.

Meantime, work continues apace on constructing the referral hospital which is being run jointly by the Norwegian, Finnish and German Red Cross under the Federation umbrella. It treated 44 out-patients yesterday and this number is expected to grow considerably in the coming days.

Plans are being put in place to organize the orderly evacuation of earthquake-injured patients from other temporary hospital facilities. When fully operational in the coming days, the Red Cross Red Crescent hospital will be the main source of medical care for a population of over 200,000 people. Satellite medical clinics have also been established in Bam by the Japanese and German Red Cross.
