Queen
Rania of Jordan today paid tribute to the work of the Iranian
Red Crescent and the International Federation when she paid
a surprise visit to the newly established Red Cross Red Crescent
referral hospital in earthquake devastated Bam.
"I am glad that the Red Cross and Red Crescent is taking
long-term responsibility in this devastated area and you seem
to be the most active," she told Halvor Lauritzen, the
International Federation team leader from Norway who showed
her around the 200-bed hospital built with support from ECHO.
The Queen found time to chat quietly with the 97-year old woman,
Shahrbanoo Mazandarani who was rescued from the ruins of her
home nine days after the earthquake by Iranian Red Crescent
volunteers and is now a patient on the Red Cross Red Crescent
medical ward.
"Queen Rania was very concerned about the elderly lady's
future and said she would take an active interest in what happens
to her now," said Lauritzen.
The VIP visitor was greeted on the maternity ward by Finnish
nurse, Orvokki Iso-Möttönen, showing off a beautiful
baby boy born just an hour before the Queen arrived. "We
are very happy that were the first one to say hello to the first
born baby in this hospital but I can assure you that it will
not be the only one," said the nurse.
