Indonesia
7
January 2005
The
President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies, Mr. Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro, will visit Sri
Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia, from 8 to 12 January 2005, to see first
hand the emergency relief operations conducted by the Red Cross and
Red Crescent volunteers and staff in the affected areas.
He will also meet with the leadership of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia, as well as with government
ministers in all three countries.
“Thousands of local volunteers of the Red Cross and the Red
Crescent were on the spot, helping victims of the devastating tidal
waves that swept the region, immediately after the disaster,”
notes Suárez del Toro.
“It will be thanks to them that medium term and long term assistance
programmes can be successfully implemented in the affected regions,
to help the most vulnerable piece their lives back together again.
The International Federation is committed to this essential task,
in close collaboration with its partners,” he adds.
