Red
Cross Red Crescent appeal launched for countries affected by Hurricane
Stan
7
October 2005
Thousands
of people are in desperate need of food, clean water and shelter,
after Hurricane Stan hit several countries in Central America leaving
destruction in its path. More than 270 people have been reported dead.
Stan has caused flooding and landslides in Guatemala, Honduras, Costa
Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico, Belize and Haiti.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
has launched an emergency appeal for 1,568,000 Swiss francs to enable
the Red Cross to respond to immediate needs. This follows the earlier
release by the Federation of 250,000 Swiss francs from its Disaster
Relief Emergency Fund (DREF).
The funds will be used to provide more than 51,000 people affected
with shelter materials, food, blankets, kitchen sets and hygiene articles
over the next six months.
Some 10,250 families affected by the floods (2,250 families in Costa
Rica, 3,000 families in Guatemala, 1,000 families in Honduras and
4,000 in Nicaragua) will benefit from the distribution of relief items.
Crops have been damaged by the flood waters, impacting on the availability
of food, and belongings have been either damaged or washed away by
the force of the water. Given that the disaster may potentially worsen,
continuing assessments will indicate whether a longer-term approach
to assistance is required.
The Red Cross National Societies in the affected countries play an
integral role in their national emergency response systems, which
coordinate disaster response activities. At the local level, the National
Societies are working together with authorities and community leaders.
