Red Cross Red Crescent revises its appeal to further assist Hurricane Stan victims
17 October 2005

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched a revised appeal for Central America, Mexico and Haiti for more than 6 million Swiss francs (USD 4.7 million / 3.9 million Euros), a significant increase on the initial appeal for 1.5 million Swiss francs sought by the International Federation on 7 October.

The revised appeal will support the response of local Red Cross National Societies in assisting 50,250 people in Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Haiti for six months. An additional appeal was launched for El Salvador where the Red Cross operation aims to assist 21,000 people.

A ccording to government sources in Guatemala 654 people have been reported dead, although this toll may rise as landslides have buried several communities.
Two weeks after Hurricane Stan struck land there is still urgent need for food, water and shelter. The delivery of humanitarian aid to isolated communities is being complicated because roads and communications infrastructure have been damaged by flooded rivers and mudslides.

“The scale of the disaster is so great that emergency relief will be required for several months to come. People are in urgent need of shelter, food, health services and sanitation,” said Nelson Castaño, coordinator of the International Federation’s Pan-American Disaster Response Unit based in Panama.

“Kitchen and hygiene sets, blankets, roofing materials and mosquito nets will be delivered to the affected population,” Castaño added.

Several Red Cross Societies from Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Norway and Spain are sending delegates, funds or activating fundraising campaigns to provide assistance to those affected by one of the worst disasters in Central American history.
