Clean water supply for Honduran villagers
25 August 2000

Four times a day, the inhabitants of the Guillermo Rodriguez community in central Honduras used to have to walk 1.5 km to collect water. The nearest source was a river, which supplied their drinking and washing water.

Soon, they will have their own water source in the village, thanks to a new water and sanitation project run by the Honduran Red Cross in the Talánga region.
The project will benefit 400 families and it is hoped that this new water system will improve the health of the people in the community and reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal illness. This mostly affects children, who make up more than 45 per cent of the population of the community.
To support the project, the Red Cross is running an awareness campaign to make the families aware of how to use the water sensibly, stress the importance of hygiene, and show how to prevent stagnant pools developing which could be breeding grounds for disease.

This is the first such project for this branch of the Honduran Red Cross, and it has been well received in the community since construction work began, as local people are aware of the importance and benefits of a clean drinking water supply.

A second water system will soon be opened in Nuevo San Diego, which will benefit 280 families. Both projects are supported by the International Federation.
