Sri Lanka Red Cross Society volunteer killed in bus bombing
16 January 2008
By Patrick Fuller, International Federation Communications Coordinator in Sri Lanka.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies extends it’s deepest sympathies to the family and colleagues of Ms.Jayasiri Anoma, a volunteer of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, who was tragically killed when a road-side bomb exploded near a bus carrying civilians at Okkampitiya near Monoragala, 240 kms south east of Colombo. Twenty five people were killed in the explosion and over sixty were injured.

Ms. Jayasiri was an active member of the Red Cross branch in Monaragala where she was working on a community based health programme that was supported by the Danish Red Cross Society. She leaves behind her husband and two children aged six and two.

Following the incident, 15 members of the Monaragala Branch Red Cross disaster response team were mobilised and deployed to the scene to assist the emergency services. The team played a vital role, providing emergency first aid as well as helping doctors and nurses cope with the wounded at two hospitals in Monaragala and Buttala. The team also helped the local authorities with the transportation of the dead bodies.

Ms. Jayasiri is one of four members of the Sri Lanka Red Cross to have been killed in the last seven months as a result of the prevailing security situation in the country.
