The
International Federation admits two new National Societies
22
June 2006
Two
new National Societies have been officially admitted by acclamation
as members of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies. They are the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and
the Israeli National Society, Magen David Adom (MDA). This brings
the number of Federation member Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
to 185.
The ceremony took place during an Extraordinary General Assembly of
the International Federation, which followed the successful outcome
of the 29th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement which brought together over 1,500 delegates from National
Societies and governments.
International Federation President, Juan Manuel Suárez del
Toro declared that ‘‘This important decision has strengthened
universality within the International Federation. Our global humanitarian
network exists to help the most vulnerable, and it is this imperative
that drives us forward. I welcome both National Societies into our
family and look forward to working with them to improve the humanitarian
challenges in their region”.
“I know they are both committed to neutral and independent action
to help their communities and full membership will strengthen their
effectiveness and their relationships with partner organizations,
” Suárez del Toro added.
The international conference had three main objectives. Firstly, to
change the Statutes of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement to take account of the existence of the additional emblem
alongside the red cross and red crescent. Secondly, to adopt the name
"red crystal" and thirdly to create a framework for the
recognition by the ICRC and admittance by the International Federation
of the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
