The online certificate programme in social and voluntary sector leadership is offered by the Red Cross Red Crescent Learning Network of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in partnership with Thunderbird Online, the online professional development division of the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

The increasing number of voluntary leaders in the social sector makes social sector leadership even more relevant today. Leadership development in this sector is more important than ever because it enables an organization to continue to respond to the social needs of people, and leads to overall social development.

This online certificate focuses on enhancing strategic knowledge and on leadership techniques to help participants succeed and lead on various levels in their organizations. The structure and content of the course are tailored to the specific needs and context of Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies.

The programme will extend the knowledge base and develop the practical skills of current and future practitioners in leadership. On completion of this programme, participants should be able to:

  • analyse and prioritize the day-to-day challenges facing their National Society and propose possible solutions.
  • reinvigorate their leadership skills to lead their organization with effective strategies for increased success
  • lead with a clear vision by communicating and evaluating a strategy of how to build and strengthen a commitment to the organization’s vision
  • understand the requirements of effective leadership and decision-making to continue to empower their team
  • define the fundamental principles of communication that engage and develop employees to recognize and build upon their individual motivators
  • understand the importance of leading through turbulent times by evaluating and handling difficult situations
  • recognize the global impact of ethical challenges, and understand the importance of leading a team with integrity
  • develop their global mindset to further understand how to successfully lead and make a continually positive impact in the global social sector

Course outline

The curriculum will comprise eight modules.

  • Module 1 – The role, trends and global realities for social sector leaders
  • Module 2 – Leading with vision 
  • Module 3 – Managing difference: The “G-local” perspective
  • Module 4 – Influencing different people
  • Module 5 – Leading at Level 5
  • Module 6 – Learning to lead though crucibles
  • Module 7 – Leading across boundaries
  • Module 8 – Leading and governing with integrity

The period of study is eight weeks part-time through online fully supported distance learning.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English.

Fees

The fees are 990 US dollars for Red Cross Red Crescent Movement staff and volunteers, and for Diplo alumni participants. The fees are due once you have been accepted on the programme.
