China - Two years after the earthquake

Su Bo, 10 years old: "The picture which I took is of my granny who was making bean juice and beancurd in our rented house. I love my granny. She has been helping to look after us since I was a young kid. She lives with us. Sometimes I wash clothes for my granny, but some clothes are too big for me to wash. My grandfather still lives in our hometown and I miss him, although we often go to see him, there is much more fun there. I have an older sister, but I don't know how old is she. My house isn't too far from school, it's a rented house in Baichao town. Our howntown is very far away." "Half of our hometown brick houses fell down. After the earthquake we lived in a tent for a while, several months later we moved to Baichao town. We rent a house here. Mum does housework at home, papa is a migrant worker. I can only see him during winter holiday. We are building a new house also, but we won't be able to move into the new house this year. When school is finished, I do some housework if my parents are busy. I cook, my cooking is ok, sometimes it tastes good. I cook rice, fried potatoes; potato is local chinenese main food. I like cabbage very much." "I was having a piss when earthquake happened, I was horrified, rushed out from the toilet of anxiety, my feeling was that there must be a huge bulldozer demolishing those houses. I didn't run too fast, later I heard it was an earthquake. Teacher Wang told me that, and at that time I was really scared, I was worried that those houses would fall down and crash me to death. The pain caused by earthquake lasted several months, sometimes I didn't want to eat, or play with other kids. Our neighbours lost a lot of things, some people were hurt but nobody died. We kept cow and pig, they were fine. I had heard of the Red Cross before. The Red Cross donated lots of daily necessities to us."(p-CHN0090B)Photo: Su Bo / IFRC
