Robert Tickner, Under Secretary General, Humanitarian Values and Diplomacy (Acting)
Robert Tickner has been Secretary General and CEO of Australian Red Cross since February 2005. Previously, he was Australia's longest-serving Federal Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, a position he held from 1990-1996. Prior to that Robert was CEO of a non-profit employment organization served as a Councillor on the Sydney City Council, and also as Principal Solicitor to the New South Wales Aboriginal Legal Service. Robert holds Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws and Bachelor of Economics degrees and has undertaken the first stage of an Executive MBA.
Robert has been a champion of Red Cross Red Crescent humanitarian diplomacy in Australia and globally with a focus on engaging governments and parliamentarians in a greater understanding of our leadership on humanitarian programmes and policy and our unique role as auxiliary to governments.
Robert has also been a champion of capacity building for locally-driven fundraising initiatives in National Societies and for Red Cross Red Crescent to responsibly leverage our global brand to drive growth and revenue generation. He is a strong advocate for implementing the 2011 Council of Delegates resolution on nuclear weapons which calls on the Movement to pursue this vital International Humanitarian Law issue.
