Humanitarian Standards: More than just numbers. Mukesh Kapila in conversation with John Damerell and Simon Eccleshall

How does a humanitarian organization apply minimum standards? And how do we ensure that respect for human dignity is an integral part of providing minimum water, food, shelter, and health? The Sphere Project's Manager John Damerell and IFRC's Head of Disaster Services Simon Eccleshall tackle the hard questions to uncover dynamics that continue to challenge the humanitarian sector.

John Damerell has a long experience in both emergency relief and development work in Africa, Asia, the Balkans and the Middle East. Before taking over as Sphere Project manager he worked for several organisations including the Lutheran World Federation, UNHCR and Danida. John has been involved in the development of Sphere standards since the beginning of the project in 1997. He took over as Sphere Project manager in February 2009.

Simon Eccleshall has over 17 years experience in humanitarian assistance.  Simon started his career as a volunteer assisting IDPs to build transitional shelters in Sri Lanka in the early 1990s. He subsequently worked with the Australian Government (AusAID), with CARE International in Jordan managing refugee camps during the 2003 Iraq crises, and with CARE in Myanmar and in Vietnam as the Deputy Country Director. Simon has been with the IFRC for 7 years and is a member of the Board for the Sphere Project.
