Damascus/Geneva (SARC/ICRC/International Federation) –Today, Dr. Abd-al-Razzaq Jbeiro, the Secretary General of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and President of the Idlib branch was killed near Khan Shaykhun, Ildib on the main Halab – Damascus Highway while traveling back in a vehicle clearly marked with the Red Crescent emblem following meetings at the SARC headquarters in Damascus.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are shocked by the death of Dr. Jbeiro and are calling on all those involved in the violence to refrain from targeting Red Crescent volunteers, staff or vehicles whose only humanitarian objective is to aid and assist, in a fully impartial and neutral manner, people in need.

The president of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Dr AbdulRahman al-Attar said that He has "officially requested the Syrian authorities to launch an investigation on the death of Dr. Jbeiro."

SARC volunteers provide life-saving first aid to the injured. Like all medical personnel, they must be allowed to carry out their work in a safe and secure way.
