International course on law and legal protection in natural disasters

Now open for nominations

The third session of the annual "International course on law and legal protection in natural disasters" will take place in Sanremo, Italy from 3-7 December 2013

This course, co-convened by the IFRC, the Brookings Institution-London School of Economics Project on Internal Displacement, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and hosted by the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, is primarily directed at senior governmental officials and parliamentarians with responsibility for legislative issues involved in disaster management, though some spaces will be open for senior representatives of National Societies and other relevant agencies.

The course will include lectures, plenary discussions, presentations by participants, practical exercises and scenario exercises. The lectures cover all aspects of disaster law, including domestic law, international disaster response law (IDRL) and human rights law.  It will be conducted in English.

The course is free of charge, but self-nominating participants will be responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Sanremo, Italy and for their own accommodation and meals. The organizers will be able to award travel/full board support to a limited number of self-nominating participants (with preference to those applying from developing countries).

If you may be interested to attend, please fill in this nomination form no later than 13 September 2013, and send it to verdult@unhcr.org.
