Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support

The Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support (PS Centre) develops knowledge and best practice within psychosocial support that informs future operations of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and its National Societies.

The PS Centre, established in 1993, is hosted by the Danish Red Cross in Copenhagen.

Its mission is to enable National Societies to respond better to psychosocial needs of vulnerable groups, through:

  • advocacy

  • generation of evidence-based knowledge

  • contribution to psychosocial programmes

  • support and guidance to staff and volunteers

Partnerships

The PS centre works with a wide range of partners, including nine National Red Cross Red Crescent Societies and four research institutions in the US, Austria, Denmark and England. It also has partnerships with several United Nations organizations and non-governmental organizations through the Inter-Agency Standing Committee on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Reference group, the MHPS network and several other networks and partnerships.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the PS Centre continue to strengthen collaborations with agencies and institutions that have expertise in psychosocial support, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, UNHCR, and non-governmental organizations.

The PS Centre is developing relations with IFRC zonal offices, particularly in parts of the world where its involvement has been relatively low.

See the PS Centre website for further information.
