IFRC condemns deadly attack on ICRC staff in Afghanistan

Geneva, 08 Feb 2017—The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) expresses outrage and condemnation at the shooting deaths of six staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan and grave concern for two others who remain missing.

“We are in deep shock and mourning over the deaths of our ICRC colleagues in Afghanistan—killed senselessly while striving to save the lives of those in need,” said IFRC Secretary General, Elhadj As Sy. “The IFRC stands with their families and loved ones in grief and solidarity and renews its call for the respect and protection of aid workers around the world.”

The ICRC team was traveling to an area south of the town of Shibergan in Jawzan province today to deliver humanitarian aid supplies to communities hit by severe snow storms when their convoy was attacked by a group of armed men.
