Under the new flag of the South Sudan Red Cross and wearing their new t-shirts, volunteers walked to the John Garang museum two-by-two singing what they call their new Red Cross anthem. “Our new Red Cross is born to shine in the heart of Africa, let’s work for humanity...”
This was the first operation of the new National Society and after some hard training, the volunteers were ready. Their task: monitor and assist people attending the celebrations to mark the birth of the Republic of Southern Sudan.
At temporary clinics established by the Ministry of Health and the military medical corps, volunteers divided into small groups to cover the whole venue, moving among the gathered crowds with stretchers and first aid boxes.
