The German Red Cross launched their commemoration activities on World Red Cross Red Crescent Day with a national billboard campaign highlighting the contribution and importance of volunteers to the movement. National society President Dr. Rudolf Seiters and Barbara Meier, winner of Germany’s Next Top Model 2007, launched the ‘150 Years and You’ campaign at the German Red Cross district office in Berlin-Wedding.

Dr. Seiters commented that the campaign was designed to thank those who already volunteer for the organization, but also to inspire the next generation to get involved in their communities. “Even today, many social services in Germany are only possible with the help and support of volunteers,” he said. “And, given an aging population, we will need them more than ever.”

The billboards feature individuals who make the work of the Red Cross possible every day – volunteers, members or donors – with the message that everyone can support the organization’s work. Barbara Meier, herself an ardent supporter of the work of the Red Cross society, said that there were many ways to make a difference. “We need people who want to work for others; and, it’s easy and simple to do. Blood donors, rescue workers, emergency volunteers and other donors; there is a place for everyone willing to help at the German Red Cross,” she said.

At the end of May, the society’s ‘Red Cross truck’ began a national road tour across Germany highlighting its work at home and abroad with an interactive, multi-sensory activation.

The German Red Cross is supported in its Jubilee events by Allianz and Volkswagen who are both committed to strengthening volunteering and community social engagement.
