Hundreds of people are without proper shelter, water or supplies on the border of Serbia and Hungary as they wait to apply for asylum.

Red Cross teams are operating on both sides of the border, providing vital food, water and emergency supplies. The Hungarian Red Cross is providing support at Roszke transit camp while the  Red Cross of Serbia providing support at Kelebija and Horgos.

Head of migration for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Leonardo Carmenati, said: “Red Cross volunteers are working in the no-man’s land between Hungary and Serbia and are providing basic emergency supplies but conditions are extremely poor and people are suffering significantly.”

Volunteers from the Red Cross of Serbia’s Subotica branch, close to Horgos and Kelebija have provided more than 1,600 hot and cold food items to hundreds of people, as well as water. Almost 40 young children on the Serbian side of the border have received food, nappies, lotion and care products on in one day alone.

There are two official transit centres on the Hungarian side of the border - Rozke and Tompa. The Hungarian Red Cross is providing a range of support at both centres including food, baby food, water, toiletries, blankets, sun cream and first aid.

The number of people attempting to cross from Serbia to Hungary has increased in recent months, with and estimated 23,000 arriving so far this year. Currently people are waiting in formal transit centres and informal camps on both sides of the border. At the informal camps, there is a lack of running water and proper shelter for families seeking asylum.
