Italian Red Cross volunteers are comforting the relatives of the those awaiting news of their loved ones at the stadium in Andria, after the head-on collision of two commuter trains in Italy on 12 July.

As cranes worked through the night to clear the wreckage, more than 40 Red Cross workers were mobilized to provide psychosocial support to the family members of those who travelled on the Corato and Ruvo di Puglia line, close to the city of Andria.

Francesco Rocca, President of the Italian Red Cross, sent a reassuring message to  the local officials in Puglia, saying that the entire national structure of the Red Cross was available upon request.

“We stand ready to support the families of victims as well as the volunteers who work in very difficult conditions at the site of the disaster and at the hospitals,” he said.

In the immediate aftermath of the collision, more than 140 Italian Red Cross volunteers went to work, some at the site, providing support with the evacuation effort, and others offering psychosocial support and emergency health assistance to families.

In Bari, the volunteers received the families of victims who came to identify the bodies of the dead. They provided psychological support in camps set up near the Institute of Forensic Medicine.

Red Cross medical teams took shifts to ensure appropriate support to members of the fire brigade and other rescue workers. In Barletta, a Red Cross volunteer answered calls from worried relatives who called the emergency number activated by the local city council.

So far, according to media reports 27 lives have died in the accident and dozens more are injured.
