Statutory meetings 2013

The Red Cross Red Crescent Statutory Meetings guide the world’s largest humanitarian network, the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (the Movement), in its effort to help people prepare for, deal with and recover from crisis. All components of the Movement journey from across the globe at the Statutory Meetings to evaluate progress, address current challenges and establish goals and priorities for the future. This year in Sydney members of the Movement gathered for the General Assembly (GA) and the Council of Delegates (CoD).

General Assembly
The General Assembly (GA), held in 2013 from 12-15 November, is the supreme body of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies ( IFRC). The General Assembly involves delegates from all 189 recognised National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and meets every two years to define the overall policy of the IFRC. As in 2011, the GA was accompanied by several workshops which will address important thematic areas for National Societies.

During the GA two more members were admitted to the IFRC: the Cyprus Red Cross Society and the South Sudan Red Cross, bringing the total membership to 189. Additionally, the Youth Award, Volunteering Award and Henry Davidson Award were conferred to National Societies or individuals who have particularly stood out for their remarkable efforts and achievements to the benefit of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement or its cause. Elections for the positions of the Federation’s President, four Vice-Presidents and twenty National Society Governing Board members also took place during the General Assembly. During the elections, each member National Society represented is allotted one vote.

Council of Delegates
Representatives from all components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: National Societies, the IFRC and the ICRC, attend the CoD, which in 2013 took place from 17-18 November. The Council addresses matters that concern the Movement, including approval of resolutions proposed. The Council of Delegates is the highest Movement internal deliberative body.
