  • Waiting for the journey to end

Fitness is one of the more than 100,000 refugees who have fled Burundi due to the ongoing violence in the country. While thousands of refugees have poured into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania has, to date, witnessed the greatest influx.

For Fitness, the journey to the town of Kigoma in Tanzania was a long one. “I don’t remember,” she says when asked how long she has been travelling. “I think I left a month ago from my home village Mukagongo in Burundi.”

  • Maintaining family communications

Every year, thousands of children flee conflict and poverty in the Central American countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras to seek safety and reunite with family in the United States.

The migration routes through Mexico often leave them vulnerable to violence and exploitation by gangs and traffickers.

Manuel was living with his mother in Honduras when he was threatened by a gang. He could either join or die. He left his hometown behind with just a backpack containing a few personal items, including contact information for his mother.

  • Reconnecting families separated by conflict in Myanmar

The Myanmar Red Cross Society is working to reunite and reconnect families separated by the conflict in north-eastern Shan State, Myanmar.  Intense fighting had displaced tens of thousands of people in the Kokang region.

As part of the humanitarian response the Myanmar Red Cross Society deployed a team dedicated to restoring family links of those displaced in Lashio. Through a free service called 'Safe and Well Phone Calls' the society is providing phones and phone credit for families to make a three minute call to their loved ones.

  • Refuge and reconnection

The accommodation centre for refugees in Kovachevtsi, Bulgaria is a place of last resort; a home for those who would face persecution or other danger on return to their former homes. It is here that 37-year-old Mohammed, his wife Zahra and their four children found refuge from the fighting in Syria. They came to Bulgaria on 13 November.

  • Growing numbers put pressure on Lebanon camps

Palestinian camps in Lebanon are like cities within the city, with their own routines full of challenges and needs. For 70 years, more than 400,000 Palestinians have lived in Lebanon in 12 so-called camps; these days the camps are more like suburbs of cities such as Beirut.

However, since the beginning of the Syria crisis, camps have seen a large increase in residents and this puts pressure on resources.

“People are often subject to human trafficking, sexual or labour exploitation; they may also be deprived of their liberty, detained or arbitrarily deported. It is our collective responsibility to offer them protection at every stage of their journey, from the country they leave to the country they will cross during their journey, to the country where they will arrive.”
