Our volunteers in action

Our volunteers in action
The Red Cross Red Crescent has more than 90 million volunteers who provide vital assistance and support to over 275 million people worldwide. These volunteers are humanitarian heroes, who sometimes risk their lives and often make considerable personal sacrifices in order to help others. Without them, the Red Cross Red Crescent is nothing. With them, it is a powerful force for humanity.

A tribute to tsunami volunteers A tribute to tsunami volunteers
More than 22,000 Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers have taken part in tsunami relief and recovery operations, often working in the most difficult circumstances imaginable. The tsunami volunteers give first aid, distribute relief supplies, purify drinking water, help people trace missing relatives, collect dead bodies from muddy rice paddies, help families clear the rubble that used to be their homes. The work is physically tiring and emotionally draining. Many were affected by the tsunami themselves, losing family, friends and their homes. Yet, their devotion never pales.

Our National Societies competed in a special World Red Cross Red Crescent Day photo competition. Each photo selected shows a volunteer in action within their National Society context.
The technical merit and subject of each photo was considered, together with the detail of the caption. Congratulations to all who took part.
