Honduras
and Peru: volunteers reach across borders to lend each other
a helping hand
Across the globe, Red Cross and Red
Crescent volunteers are called upon each day to make personal
sacrifices in order to help others. Trained to respond to
natural catastrophes, dedicated volunteers, like Felipe del
Cid of Honduras, are always on stand-by to support emergency
operations both at home and abroad. |

Pakistan:
volunteers form backbone of earthquake recovery operation
Asif joined the Pakistan Red Crescent
Society (PRCS) in 2003. When a massive earthquake struck the
north of his country in October 2005, Asif immediately offered
to help with the emergency relief efforts and he’s been
distributing essential aid items, such as blankets, winterized
tents and shelter repair kits, to survivors ever since. |

and Syria: volunteers play key role in preparing for disasters
Twenty-six-year-old Firas has been a
volunteer with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent since 1998 and belongs
to a growing number of volunteers in the Middle East and North
Africa, who are specializing in disaster management. |

Lanka: volunteers at the heart of tsunami recovery efforts
“It’s hard work, but it is
also very satisfying when you see the smiles on the people’s
faces when they thank the Red Cross,” says Kathija, a
volunteer for the SLRCS, who works on a livelihoods project
in Ampara. “To have the opportunity to bring hope and
change to people’s lives makes me feel that I am doing
something useful,” she adds. |

“Being around the volunteers inspires
me to work even harder, especially when I see how eager and
energetic they are in giving up their time to help others,”

Zimbabwe:
volunteers provide vital assistance to families coping with
HIV/AIDS Joyce Chipfupi
is a busy young mother of four living in Marondera, a small
town located 75 kilometres east of the Zimbabwean capital of
Harare. Joyce has been a Red Cross volunteer since 1993 and
helps provide hundreds of families affected by HIV/AIDS with
valuable medical and nutritional advice, as well as emotional
support. |
