Reducing,
reusing and recycling in the Maldives
Many of us take for granted that we can
leave our garbage and recycling bins out once a week and they
will be taken away. Yet in the Maldives, a country of 1,200
small islands spread across a thousand kilometres, managing
household waste has been anything but simple. And it’s
a task that was made practically impossible by the tsunami
that hit the Indian Ocean almost two and a half years ago. |

Working
together to combat youth violence in the Americas
The regional strategy for violence prevention
for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean was published
in 2005 and disseminated internationally. More recently, the
plan of action has been updated to cover the next few years
and laying down a framework for implementation. This aims
to address the sense of alienation, loss of creativity and
lack of aspirations among young people whose human rights
have been violated since childhood and who are therefore most
vulnerable to the culture of violence. |

Team
work brings swift response to floods in Burundi
In early 2007, torrential rains across much
of Burundi led to floods that claimed lives and caused widespread
damage to homes, social infrastructures and crops. The Bujumbura
Rural province Red Cross branch immediately mobilized its emergency
response team. Volunteers quickly disinfected the surviving
houses and other flooded areas with chlorine to prevent disease,
while others assessed the damage and immediate needs of residents. |

Partnership
helps preserve the environment Shortly
after the tsunami struck, the American Red Cross entered into
a partnership with the environmental group WWF who, in the wake
of the disaster, had developed some “green construction
policy guidelines”. These guidelines are now helping the
American Red Cross and other organisations involved in tsunami
recovery to plan and carry out recovery projects while protecting
natural resources. |
