World AIDS Day - 1 December 2001

AIDS will kill more people in this decade than all the wars and disasters in the last 50 years. Since the epidemic began, over 60 million people worldwide have contracted the HIV virus. 22 million of those have already died.

The Red Cross Red Crescent has been involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS since the mid-1980s. To mark World AIDS Day 2001, National Societies across the globe will be participating in activities aimed at raising public awareness about HIV/AIDS.
