World AIDS
Day 2004 - 1 December 2004
National Societies around the world will mark World AIDS Day with
candlelight marches, cultural performances, ceremonies, sports activities
and other awareness efforts. People living with HIV/AIDS will be
key partners in many of these events as the Red Cross Red Crescent
continues the theme of the ‘Truth
about AIDS. Pass it on…’ campaign and honours those
who have lost their lives and loved ones to AIDS-related causes.
1 December will also be an opportunity to join the international
community in commemorating the 10th
anniversary of the principle of ‘greater involvement of people
living with HIV/AIDS’ and those people living with and
affected by HIV/AIDS who contribute to the global HIV/AIDS response.
In Geneva the Federation Secretariat will host an event in partnership
with UNAIDS and 11 other humanitarian
organization to mark women’s voices, vulnerabilities and victories
in the face of HIV/AIDS. The
truth about AIDS. Pass it on…campaign developed a Communications
Pack with resources to guide National Societies in planning
their World AIDS day events. The stamps campaign phase II was developed
to help address the vulnerabilities of women in the face of HIV/AIDS
and reduce the stigma many women living with HIV have to face on
a daily basis. The stamps reveal the truth about how HIV is transmitted
to complement phase
I of the stamps which dispelled the myths and fears related
to HIV infection.

Special focus 2004:10th Anniversary - The
greater involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS
A decade after the Paris AIDS Summit where the principle of greater
involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS (GIPA) was mentioned
and articulated for the first time on 1 December 1994, the Federation
and the Global Network of people living with HIV/AIDS embarked on
a project in which people living with HIV/AIDS evaluated GIPA
in action.Several Red Cross and Red Crescent people living with
HIV/AIDS, including Jose Maria from the Argentine Red Cross and
David Mukasa from the Uganda Red Cross participated in the project.
“GIPA means providing the infected and affected with opportunities
to constructively participate in programs and other endeavors to
reduce the harm caused by HIV or AIDS. GIPA also demands the recognition
of the important contribution of the very infected or affected,”
says David.

Code of Good Practice for NGO's Responding to HIV/AIDS
On 1 December, the Federation will join over 160 NGOs in launching
the Code of Good Practice for NGOs Responding to HIV/AIDS. The project
brings together good practices and lessons learned over 2 decades
of a global HIV/AIDS response to meet the challenges posed by the
vast increase in NGO’s responding to HIV/AIDS as well as provide
common principles for the diverse range of NGO’s contributing
to the HIV/AIDS response. The Code also aims to ensure that evidence
of what works in responding to HIV/AIDS is used to develop programmes
and allocate resources.
