InterAmerican Conference, Ecuador
The XVIII Inter-American Conference took place
in Guayaquil in Ecuador from 4 to 7 June 2007. Almost 500 representatives
from the 35 National Societies in the Americas have meet to review
the progress made since the last conference in Chile in 2003 and
discuss the future directions of the Red Cross in the region with
an emphasis on working with communities.
The motto of the conference has been 'safer
and healthier communities' which integrate the thematic areas of:
- Community risk reduction
- Community health
- Promotion of tolerance and diversity in the
community
These three areas align with the goals of the
Global Agenda and represent a continuation of the previous Inter-American
Conference celebrated in Santiago de Chile in 2003, where the
focus was on health and disasters.
The day of the opening ceremony took place the
Inter-American gathering of the Red
Cross youth.
Representatives from the Federation, the ICRC,
partner National Societies and other organizations also have been
present at the conference.
