Our world, our challenges

Our world is facing four great challenges, each with immense humanitarian consequences: migration, violence, climate change and health and disease. How can we make vulnerable communities safer? The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is committed to cooperation and partnership at all levels so that together we can improve the lives of millions of people all over the world.

The Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Red Crescent

The seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary service, Unity and Universality.

Proclaimed in Vienna in 1965, the seven Fundamental Principles bond together the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, The International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. They guarantee the continuity of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and its humanitarian work.

The Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief was developed and agreed upon by eight of the world's largest disaster response agencies in the summer of 1994 and represents a huge leap forward in setting standards for disaster response.

It is being used by the International Federation to monitor its own standards of relief delivery and to encourage other agencies to set similar standards.

Climate change: turning the tide

The global climate is changing, and people all over the world are confronting new, more severe risks. Climate change will have major implications for humanitarian organisations like the Red Cross / Red Crescent.

The expected increase of floods, droughts, intense cyclones, heat waves, sea level rise, pests and diseases will affect millions of the most vulnerable people all over the word, in particular the poorest people in the poorest countries.

Stigma is the attitude that comes from the powerful combination of shame and fear.

Discrimination is the behaviour derived from that attitude.

The only way of making progress of making against this epidemic is to replace shame with solidarity and fear with hope...

Our world, together against HIV

HIV and AIDS will kill more people this decade that all the wars and disasters in the past 50 years. Since the epidemic began, 25 million people have died and more than 40 million are now living with HIV.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have been involved in the fight against the spread of the HIV since the mid-1980s. With its 100 million volunteers, the International Federation is able to play an essential role in coordinating and supporting local efforts to combat the disease.
