Death of Federation delegate in Ngara

Annick Barros, a French Red Cross delegate working for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies died last night in Nairobi from injuries sustained in a car accident in Ngara, Tanzania. Present and former colleagues are deeply saddened by her death.

Former Yugoslavia: the right to dignity

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies continues to oppose the involuntary repatriation of refugees to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Federation advocates voluntary repatriation based on sound information, readily available to those concerned.

New agreement with Swiss authorities

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Swiss government signed an agreement today that gives the Federation a status similar to that of other international organizations based in Switzerland. The Status Agreement was signed in Berne by Federation President Mario Villarroel Lander and Flavio Cotti, the Swiss Foreign Affairs Minister.

Mobilising for reintegration

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is planning massive aid to help hundreds of thousands of Rwandan refugees reintegrate into their home communities. Even as Rwandan Red Cross and Federation workers are fulfilling the most urgent needs of the refugees - food, water and first aid - plans are underway to help them settle in their original villages.

Federation seeks access to refugees in eastern Zaire

The current crisis in the Great Lakes region of Africa is posing one of the most difficult challenges for the International Federation as it tries to develop an action plan to assist up to 1.1 million refugees. Practically nothing is known about their fate, as the Federation's assistance structure in the region has been severely damaged in recent days because of heavy fighting.

Federation maintains activities in South Kivu camps

Staff and volunteers from the Red Cross Society of the Republic of Zaire are carrying out distributions of food and firewood today in two refugee camps in the South Kivu region of Zaire. Nearly 80,000 refugees, housed in the camps of Nyamirangwe and Kashusha are receiving rations of maize, beans and oil.

Federation airlift for refugees

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies plans to airlift emergency supplies into eastern Zaire this weekend, to provide assistance to up to 100,000 of nearly 250,000 Rwandan and Burundian refugees who fled fighting in the region of Uvira last week. The International Federation intends to fly cargo planes into Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, carrying food, fuel, tents, plastic sheeting, medical supplies and water disinfectants. The flights are scheduled to begin Saturday 26 October and to continue for several days, according to needs.

Two Red Cross workers killed in Zaire

Two workers from the Red Cross Society of the Republic of Zaire (ZRC) were killed and three others have had their legs amputated after their bus hit a land mine near Goma in eastern Zaire.

Three Red Cross workers killed in Zaire

Three workers from the Red Cross Society of the Republic of Zaire (ZRC) were killed last night when unidentified gunmen attacked a supply depot of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies near Goma in eastern Zaire. One Zairean UNHCR security guard also died in the attack and four people were injured.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) are suspending their activities in Koboko, northern Uganda, following a rebel attack late on 24 June in which a Uganda Red Cross worker and 9 other people were killed.

One-day suspension of Burundi operation

Operations in Burundi are being suspended for one day by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as a sign of sympathy with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Three ICRC delegates were killed when their vehicles were ambushed yesterday.

Long-term assistance to Chernobyl victims continues

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is stepping up efforts to detect thyroid cancer in children to augment its programme for the victims of Chernobyl. Other measures include monitoring radiation levels in highly contaminated areas, continuing the distribution of milk and vitamins to 60,000 children and the establishment of psycho-social programmes for people in contaminated areas.

Liberia: delegates evacuated
12 April 1996
The last two delegates representing the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Monrovia are being evacuated today. They will be flown by helicopter from the American embassy in Monrovia to Freetown, in Sierra Leone, and from there travel to the Federation's regional delegation in Abidjan. Three other delegates left Monrovia last Wednesday. The local personnel employed by the Federation has also left the capital.

Universal First Aid techniques for the general public

In Lyon, France, 23 experts in first aid from the five continents agreed on principles and techniques which are universally applicable in 12 emergency situations. They include fainting spells, burns, fractures, haemorrhaging, practising cardio-vascular resuscitation and removing a victim from a dangerous site.

Chernobyl : 10 years after

A photo exhibition on the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and humanitarian response by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will open at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum on Thursday 4 April.

Food aid for North Korea

Responding to a request from the Red Cross Society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today launched a worldwide appeal for more than 7 million Swiss francs. The funds will be used to continue a vital feeding programme for 130,000 people (26,000 families) who faced severe hunger after unprecedented flooding destroyed crops and food stocks last year.

Since late January, more than 1,100 people in northern Nigeria have died from cerebro spinal meningitis. And an estimated 15% to 20% of the population living in rural areas have been infected with the virus.

Angola : second Red Cross staff member improves after ambush

A staff member of the Angola Red Cross, employed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is off the critical list. Francisco dos Santos was shot and seriously wounded on Saturday 20 January in an ambush on the road between the towns of Namib and Benguela.

Refugees flee Mugano camp in Burundi

Shooting by unidentified assailants in Burundi last night has caused the flight into Tanzania of the population of Mugano, a refugee camp managed by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
