The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today elected the first woman president in its 78-year history, Dr. Astrid Heiberg. She has been president of the Norwegian Red Cross since 1993.

Certain articles recently published in the press report that, as the result of an internal study, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement may be ready to abandon its traditional emblems, for a more neutral "red diamond". "These statements are not correct," said George Weber, Secretary General of the International Federation, "these issues have yet to be debated by the National Societies and the Movement as a whole".

Red cross workers killed in Rwanda

Two Rwandan Red Cross workers were killed on Friday 12 September when their vehicle was ambushed on the road between Nkamira and Gisenyi. The driver, Shabani Nsanzebahiga and Mr. Bucyensenge, a member of the local Kanama Red Cross committee, were escorting an employee of the Ministry of Youth, Miss Espérance, from the Red Cross youth camp in Nkamira to hospital in Gisenyi. She was also killed.

Death of Diana, Princess of Wales

New Internet service: "Direct from the field"

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today launched an innovative addition to its Internet Web site. An 'instant news' page, called Direct from the field, will carry near real-time images (with supporting text) of Red Cross and Red Crescent activities from some of the most isolated places on Earth.

New North Korea appeal

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today launched a revised appeal for nearly 26 million Swiss francs to finance an expansion of its assistance to flood victims in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Federation expands aid to North Korea

The number of people receiving food assistance from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will increase to more than 700,000 following a two-week assessment mission to the country. The expanded operation, which will begin in July, will also cover four more counties - Anju, Sunchon, Kujang and the industrial town of Wonsan - in addition to the 15 where the Federation is currently active.

More food aid for North Korea

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today welcomed a historic agreement between Red Cross Societies in North and South Korea. The two Societies signed an agreement this morning in Beijing on the delivery of 50,000 tonnes of food from South Korea to the hunger-ridden North - enough to feed as many as 500,000 people for seven and a half months. The food will be delivered before the end of July.

Federation to examine more aid for North Korea

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today expressed its hope that continued talks between the two Korean Red Cross Societies would lead to increased aid for the hundreds of thousands of North Koreans suffering from food shortages. A first round of talks between Red Cross officials from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea ended in Beijing today.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today welcomed the intiative of two of its member societies to meet this week to discuss how to work together to help hundreds of thousands of people suffering from food shortages in North Korea. Red Cross officials from North and South Korea will meet in Beijing on 3 May to discuss food assistance and other humanitarian matters.

Partnership in Copenhagen

One hundred and three cooperation agreements between Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Europe and the former Soviet Union were signed in Copenhagen this week. The so-called partnership agreements signed at the European Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent from 17-20 March, involve an exchange of skills and expertise rather than direct funding.

Zaire : assistance for Tingi Tingi refugees

A new site is being established by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to shelter refugees from Tingi Tingi, Kalima and Shabunda. Set up in cooperation with the Red Cross Society of the Republic of Zaire, it is located 25 kilometres north of Ubundu and 95 kilometres south of Kisangani and will house more than 100,000 refugees. Red Cross volunteers will begin clearing the site today.

Federation reduces staff in Rwanda
5 February 1997
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is relocating most of its delegates from Kigali, Rwanda, due to the deteriorating security situation in the country. Twenty-five delegates are leaving for Nairobi in the next two days. A skeleton staff of six delegates will remain in Kigali to maintain the delegation until operations can be resumed. The decision to reduce staff follows the killing of eight aid workers and a general escalation of violence in the past three weeks.

1997 Emergency Appeal: aid for forgotton victims

The International Federation's Emergency Appeal for 1997 reflects the continued need for long-term assistance to millions of forgotten victims around the world. In its Appeal, the International Federation is seeking 279.2 million Swiss francs to assist at least 9.4 million people. The funds will be used to finance 37 major programmes in 35 countries, with the largest operations - in terms of cost - in the Great Lakes region of Africa (54.3 million Swiss francs) and former Yugoslavia (51.1 million).
