Federation
launches appeal to help Sri Lanka cyclone victims

The International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today launched
a preliminary appeal for 525,000 Swiss francs after a cyclone in Sri
Lanka left tens of thousands homeless. The funds will be used to assist
10,000 people with shelter, kitchen utensils, clothing and blankets.

Chernobyl
closes but humanitarian needs persist says Red Cross

The International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies welcomed the closure
of the Chernobyl nuclear plant today. However, it warned that 14 years
after the accident, thousands of people are still living in severely
contaminated areas. With an incidence of 100 cases of cancer per 100,000
people. |
The
Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina is created

The Red Cross Society
of Bosnia and Herzegovina will hold its Constitutive Assembly on December
15. A single Red Cross Society will thus be established in the country.
The establishment of the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina
is an historic occasion, the result of a process which has lasted
for almost three years. |
The International Federation launches Appeal 2001-2002

The changing face
of disasters in the 21st century was highlighted today (December 5)
by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
at the launch of its Appeal 2001-2002 seeking 355 million Swiss francs
for 81 humanitarian assistance programmes world-wide. |

million volunteers to fight AIDS in Africa

Crescent today marks World Aids Day with a frank admission that it
has not been doing enough in view of the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic in Africa, where 25.3 million people are living with HIV/AIDS
including over 100,000 Red Cross/Red Crescent volunteers. |

Red
Cross warns of major health threat as floods affect millions in Bangladesh

Red Crescent Society have intensified relief operations across five
districts in western Bangladesh where over 2.5 million people have

Red Cross airlifts medicines to DPR Korea

The first cargo
of 43 tonnes of medicine has arrived in Pyongyang. The medicines,
airlifted by the Danish Red Cross, will be distributed to 450 hospitals
and 1,250 health clinics in four provinces of the DPR Korea, helping

to provide immediate relief to 600,000 people who have lost their

by recent severe flooding in Bangladesh. The funds will be used

Long-term solution to a long-standing
problem

A joint working
group on the issue of the emblems of the International Red Cross and
Red Crescent Movement concluded the moment had come to move quickly
to adopt a new treaty which would see the Israeli and Kazakh national
societies admitted to the Movement, the Movement's Standing Commission
was told in Geneva on 15-16 June.

hospital, equipped with two operating theatres, x-ray, laboratory,
surgical equipment, medicines and medical supplies, is on its way
to Indonesia, following the massive earthquake that devastated Bengkulu
province in western Sumatra on 4 June.

of the powerful earthquake that struck the island of Sumatra on Sunday.

May in Nice and said a consensus was emerging on a way to admit the

group on the emblem, composed of representatives from 16 States and
representatives from the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, said it
will recommend a third protective emblem be added to the Geneva Conventions.
The emblem would be additional to the red cross and red crescent.
