First Red Cross Red Crescent relief flight arrives in cyclone-devastated Myanmar 09/05/2008
A plane laden with emergency relief supplies arrived at Yangon international airport late last night local time (8 May). The flight, chartered by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, took off from Kuala Lumpur carrying five tonnes of emergency shelter equipment.

Aid agencies warn of housing crisis as Bangladesh cyclone victims enter monsoon season 14/04/2008
Five months after Cyclone Sidr killed 4,000 people and destroyed nearly 1.5 million homes, millions of Bangladeshis remain in dire need of housing assistance. With only weeks to go before the start of the annual monsoon rains, hundreds of thousands of families are still living under plastic sheeting, tarpaulins and other basic shelters which leave them at the mercy of the elements.

Empress Shôken Fund supporting projects all over the world 11/04/2008
In 2008, the Empress Shôken Fund will grant nearly 470,000 Swiss francs ($463,000 USD/€295,600) to 11 projects carried out by Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies around the globe. A special emphasis is being placed on African initiatives, which will receive around a third of this year’s grants.

International Federation launches new five-year food security strategy in Africa focussing on long-term investments 10/04/2008
Investing in long-term food security projects in Africa is key to fight some of the root causes of hunger and malnutrition, says the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as it launches a new five-year strategy to scale up food security programmes in 15 African countries. The new plan, announced today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will be financed through an appeal for 45 million Swiss francs (US$ 43.5 million / € 28.5 million) over the next five years. The funds will be used to assist some 2.25 million people, or nearly half a million families.

Mozambique: Cyclone “Jokwe” has already destroyed thousands of houses 11/03/2008
Cyclone “Jokwe” made landfall in Mozambique on Sunday. It is currently affecting Zambezia Province and will most likely cause further damage to this area already battered by floods earlier this year. “We are concerned about the situation and the possibility of more flooding to come,” says Fernanda Teixeira, secretary general of the Mozambique Red Cross (CVM) in the capital, Maputo. “The cyclone might also make its way to Sofala and Inhambane Province within the next 24 hours.”

Cold spell in Tajikistan: International Federation launches appeal to help vulnerable elderly survive 06/03/2008
In response to a prolonged spell of unseasonably cold weather which has left thousands of vulnerable elderly people in a dire situation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency appeal for over 560,000 Swiss francs (€ 355,000/US$ 540,000) to support the emergency activities of the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan (RCST). The funds will be used to bring food, emergency items and hygiene articles to more than 5,000 people over the next six months. Most of these are female-headed households and elderly people living alone in the rural districts of Vakhdat and Rudaki.

International Federation announces new US$ 65 million appeal to combat HIV and AIDS in Eastern Africa 15/02/2008
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies announced today during the Eastern Africa Partnership Meeting in Entebbe, Uganda, that it is launching an appeal for 71.6 million Swiss francs (US$ 65 million, € 45 million) to support Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies in Eastern Africa in fighting HIV over the next three years. The programme aims to reach 17 million people with information on prevention over the three years, provide care and support to nearly 30,000 people living with HIV and 130,000 orphans and vulnerable children.

Red Cross brings vital help to thousands of Chadian refugees in Cameroon 08/02/2008
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is transporting 20 tonnes of non food items to help the Chadian refugees in Northern Cameroon. Two planes and two lorries are carrying blankets, mats, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, hygiene articles and a water treatment unit from Yaounde to Kousseri, where thousands of Chadian refugees are in need of immediate assistance.
