Ruined maize crop in the Zambezi valley on the main road between Caia and Sena. The Mozambique Red Cross (MRC) Sunday conducted a field assessment in this part of the Zambezi valley to try to determine the impact of floods which have displaced tens of thousands of people throughout the country. A MRC team visited villages between Caia and the town of Sena, opposite Mutarara, where local officials said agricultural losses in this year's rainy-season floods are already estimated to be much worse than a year ago. "In the 2007 floods just over 11,000 hectares of maize were lost in this region," Osorio Sozinho Alfredo, the Sena administrator, told MRC volunteers. "We estimate the losses this year are already running at about 14,000 hectares."
