Local residents prepare to cross the swollen River Buzi, often a dangerous business during the rainy season. Mozambican marines and Mozambique Red Cross (MRC) boat volunteers have been taking advantage of an apparent break in the rains upstream in the Buzi river system to hone their aquatic-rescue skills. The MRC and a marine detachment have between them ferried a total of 1,117 villagers to safety in the nearby resettlement centres of Guara Guara and Bandua in recent weeks.
